Men Sew Too
The general concept is that men only want to play chess, but we believe that men want to be part of the community and to feel useful. At Recycling is Fun many of our volunteers are men.

The idea that sewing, knitting and Crochet is a “woman” activity is a social stigma that exists in modern western society.  Until very recent men where the tailors and in many countries both boys and girls were taught these skills in school. Many men can sew beautifully and some like knitting and crocheting, they have the right to enjoy this beneficial activity.

No one has to be pressured into doing something they don’t want so if men are not inclined to participate in crafts, they can still be great helpers! They can prepare materials for other people to do crafts. Some activities they might enjoy are shredding, cutting and winding wool. They will feel useful and motivated. If they understand how many people will benefit form their help they will gladly participate. We have amazing experiences with men and have learned that they enjoy repetitive work and most of all they want be helpful and useful, it a wonderful feeling to know that they are helping their fellow men and the environment.

Some Stories to illustrate this point:

Ian was in a wheelchair, vey depressed and convinced there was no purpose in living. His daughter heard about Recycling Is Fun and called us to see if we could get some activity for him to do. We asked him to help us with winding wool. He passed away21 months after. The daughter rang us saying, “ My dad died a happy man thank you” he was renewed with purpose and felt happy and useful the last  months of his life.

Ike was a very cranky, miserable, and full of negativity. His wife heard about a group that was joining to make Plarn and convinced him to go along. The members had lots of fun and felt great about doing something that would help others and the environment.  His wife told us of his amazing transformation, Ike had became a much more happy person to be around!

In our 38 years we have witnessed many men who enjoy participating in hobbies even if it means just helping to prepare materials for others.
